Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia and progressive neurodegenerative disease. The recent findings suggest that lipid peroxidation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. It is well known that lipids are oxidized by heating to produce lipid peroxides, which further cause oxidative stress in the body. In the present study, we investigated the induction of cell death and changes in oxidative damage proteins in monkeys exposed to oxidative stress.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
ω-6系の食用油が加熱されることにより生じる過酸化脂質が、アルツハイマー病や2型糖尿病、非アルコール性脂肪肝炎などの生活習慣病に関与することが最近明らかになりつつある。過酸化脂質は、生体内で酸化ストレスを引き起こし細胞死を誘導する。本研究により、過酸化脂質などにより誘導される酸化ストレスが細胞死を引き起こすメカニズムの一端が明らかになり、生活習慣病の予防法の開発にもつながることが期待される。
