| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Social isolation is one of social determinants of health. We compared following points in Japan and England: 1) characteristics of social isolation among older adults, 2) association between social isolation and health behavior or mortality, and 3) population attributable fraction of social isolation. We used two large scale epidemiological ageing cohort data: Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) in Japan and English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) in England. We confirmed that social isolation among older adults was significantly associated with depressive symptoms, smoking, oral health, and mortality in both countries. Since proportion of social isolation was remarkably higher in Japan, the severe social isolation among older adults was attributed to around 18,000 premature deaths annually in Japan, in contrast with around 1,800 in England. Nationwide promotion of social participation and relationships is necessary in Japan to combat social isolation among older adults.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
英国政府では社会的孤立や孤独による国の経済的損失が年間320億ポンド（約4.9兆円）に上ると推計している。日英で孤立しがちな高齢者の特性には相違はないが、日本社会は孤立しがちな高齢者が顕著に多いこと、孤立状態による早期死亡のインパクトは英国よりも大きく、社会的孤立対策の推進が必要であることなどが示唆された。本研究を通じて、8本（うち、査読付の国際誌6本）の論文を発表することができた。日英の大規模コホートデータの比較研究の基盤を整備し、研究成果を発信できたことの学術的意義も大きいと思われる。今後、英国の動向を見つつ、さらなる研究を進め、社会的孤立の予防・軽減にむけた社会環境要因の探求を図りたい。
