Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to study specific villages and compile detailed field reports on the folk culture of these villages in an attempt to investigate China's cultural policies on rural villages and their actual impact amid the dramatic reappraisal of folk culture in line with the radical change from a policy of eliminating the remnants of feudalism to the conservation of cultural life. Two villages in the mountainous areas of northeast Zhejiang Province were identified for field research. Through field investigations over a period of four years, this research project was able to bring to light the significant impact of the two policy trends of conservation of old towns and non-material cultural relics on the local communities, local tourism development efforts and other moves in response to these policies, as well as issues arising therefrom.
