Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to understand Asian history in 20^<th> century by exploring life course of the elderly in East and Southeast Asia focusing on family event and considering it with reference to social change in 20^<th> century. We focused on 'women's experiences such as pregnancy, childbirth, housework and care for the elderly. There are two research methods ; questionnaire survey and intensive interviews. We hold questionnaire survey on life course in 5 areas, 4 countries. The objects are people who were born during 1920^<th> to 1940^<th>. We corrected 223 cases in China (Dalian), 197 cases in Korea (Seoul and Daegu), 75 cases in Philippines (Laoag), 81 cases in Japan (Nagoya). We published some findings on life course and social change by analyzing the data in each society. There are two focuses of the intensive interviews ; one is on life course of the elderly and social change in 20^<th> century's Asia, the other is on life course and transnational migration in contemporary Asia under rapid globalization. We published some findings about the themes such as how westernized modern family-gender norms had penetrated into elite women during colonial era, how transnational life course is emerging in contemporary Asian societies. In addition to these academic publications, we made social contribution by inviting co-researchers from China and Korea and holding international seminar for the general public.
