Research Abstract |
According to the results of this research, feminist discourses that emerged in modern Britain presented the ideal of women as being equal to men in intellect, such as Horace's "masculine Sappho." However, in denying women's masculine sexuality (which had implicated female homosexuality or licentiousness since ancient times), these discourses instead insisted on women's asexuality (without sexual passion) in heterosexual relations. The asexualization of masculine women was related to the rise of a compulsory heterosexual culture and society.
