Research Abstract |
This paper describes the transitions from the Edo period onward that led to the current usage of conditional expressions in the Kamigata/Osaka dialect and the Edo/Tokyo dialect, and considers the fundamental rule underlying the transitions. From the Edo period onward in the Japanese language, a subordinate clause has become more important as a function of conjunctive particle than previously. Furthermore, a trend can be seen whereby specific conjunctive particle is used intensively in the Kamigata/Osaka dialect, and several conjunctive particles are used in the Edo/Tokyo dialect. The transitions in conditional expressions require an examination of how the Kamigata/Osaka dialect and the Edo/Tokyo dialect have influenced each other, for a better understand of the history of Japanese grammar.
