人類集団のなかには、タンパク摂取量が極端に少ないにもかかわらず、タンパク欠乏にともなう臨床症状をしめさないものがあることが知られている。これは、「低タンパク適応」と呼ばれ、代表者のグループは特に腸内細菌叢の役割に着目しながら、そのメカニズム解明を目指してきた。本申請課題では、これまで研究をすすめてきたパプアニューギニア高地に加えて、タンパク摂取量が少ないことが想定される２つの地域を対象に加えることにより、「低タンパク適応」メカニズムの固有性と普遍性を明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
It is known that there are human populations who, despite having an extremely low protein intake, do not exhibit clinical symptoms associated with protein deficiency. This phenomenon is referred to as 'low-protein adaptation.' In this research project, we investigated the role of gut microbiota in nutritional adaptation by studying people living in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, as well as those residing in northern Laos and rural agricultural and fishing villages in Japan. Additionally, we examined the establishment of a protocol for the IAAO (Indicator Amino Acid Oxidation) method to evaluate individual protein requirements and conducted animal experiments by transplanting feces from 'low-protein model mice.'"

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
私たちが食べるものは、消化、吸収、代謝、排泄されることで、生命の維持に寄与している。本研究の成果は、このプロセスが消化管内に存在する細菌によって修飾されうること、すなわち、どのような腸内細菌をもつかによって、同じものを食べても個人の栄養状態・健康状態は違ったものになりうることを示すものである。腸内細菌による栄養の修飾は、自然の優先する社会に生きていた人類にとっては当たり前のものだったのかもしれない。現代社会に生きる人類が直面する健康問題のいくつかは、腸内細菌叢の栄養修飾にかかわる私たちの理解不足に起因するのではないか。
