Outline of Research at the Start

大気中のPM2.5などの微粒子(エアロゾル)や、光化学オキシダントであるオゾンなどの微量気体は、大気汚染物質であると同時に気候変動を引き起こす物質であり、短寿命気候強制因子と呼ばれる。それらの気温や降水量などへの影響について、自ら開発を進めてきた気候モデルを用いて、組成ごと・地域ごとに定量的に評価する。その際に、気候モデルにおいて不確実性の高いエアロゾルに依存する雲・降水過程の精緻化を図りつつ、近年顕在化している極端な気温や降水などの災害に対する短寿命気候強制因子の影響の定量的理解を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

エアロゾル気候モデルMIROC-SPRINTARSを用いて、主要な短寿命気候強制因子(SLCFs)である硫酸塩エアロゾルの燃料消費起源の前駆気体SO2の排出量を全球一様の比率で増減させる感度実験を行った。その際のCO2濃度を、2000年レベルおよびその2倍の2パターンに設定した。その結果、同量の硫酸塩エアロゾル濃度の低下であっても、気温上昇はCO2濃度が高い状態の方が大きくなることを示した。これは、大気汚染対策を実施する場合、同時に温室効果ガス濃度の上昇を抑制しなければ、地球温暖化が加速度的に進行することを示している。この研究成果の論文公表に合わせてプレスリリースを行ったところ、関心が高く、計5紙に掲載されたほか、国際的な科学ニュースサイトでも紹介した。
硫酸塩エアロゾルのほか、ブラックカーボン(BC)の排出量を変化させる感度実験をMIROC-SPRINTARSを用いて行った。BCは大気の加熱によって降水量を大きく減少させることで、顕著な負の水循環感度を速い応答として生み出すのに対して、硫酸塩は主に地上気温の変化に連動する遅い応答として起こる水蒸気フィードバックの結果として、正の水循環感度を生み出すことがわかった。
NICAM-Chem全球14kmの雲解像モードにおいても、SO2およびBCの排出量を全球一様に変化させる感度実験を行い、従来の気候モデルでは解像できない雲に関わる SLCFsの気候応答を直接的に計算することの重要性を示唆する結果が得られた。
当初計画以上の研究成果を求めて、超高解像度エアロゾルモデルSCALE-SPRINTARSの開発に着手した。このモデルの水平分解能は、個々の雲の過程を扱える数十~数百mであり、超高分解能で大気エアロゾルの輸送過程を計算し、得られるエアロゾルの時空間分布とSCALEの大気放射過程および雲・降水過程との相互作用を表現できることになる。
研究代表者の竹村は7年連続で、研究分担者の須藤は2年連続でHighly Cited Researchersに選出された。

Reason

2年度目であるにもかかわらず、研究代表者および研究分担者が筆頭著者の査読論文(SCIE雑誌掲載論文5編)を当初想定よりも多く発表することができた。これらの業績は、当初の計画どおり、気候モデルによるSLCFs排出量変化による気候変化の感度解析の予備実験、および雲・降水素過程のモデル精緻化を行ったところ、その過程において新たな発見があったことに起因する。硫酸塩エアロゾル濃度の低下に伴う気温上昇が同量の硫酸塩エアロゾル濃度の低下であっても、CO2濃度が高い状態の方が大きくなることを定量的に示した研究成果が新聞5紙に掲載されたことは、専門外を含めてインパクトのある研究成果であることを示唆している。また、従来まで診断変数として取り扱っていた降雨・降雪を陽に予報するスキームを開発して気候モデルへ実装し、降雨・降雪による大気放射の散乱・吸収の効果も組み込んだ研究は、これまでの気候モデルでは本質的に欠落していたプロセスを導入したことで、関連研究分野に強いインパクトがある。
超高分解能エアロゾルモデルSCALE-SPRINTARSの開発は、当初研究計画を遙かに超えるものである。計画立案時には、SCALEによるLES実験から得られる雲・降水過程に関する知見を活用することとしていた。しかし、優秀な博士研究員を採用することができたため、雲の力学・物理過程を直接的に詳細に扱うことが可能なモデルにエアロゾル関連過程を組み込み、雲・エアロゾル相互作用を一層本質的に表現できる数値モデル開発に取り組むこととした。開発の進捗は速く、エアロゾル輸送過程の組み込みはほぼ完了している。SCALE-SPRINTARSは、本研究課題後半で活用する予定であるほか、研究終了後には関連研究分野に公開することで、今後広く活用されることが見込まれる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

研究期間前半で実施した、雲・降水過程を中心とした数値モデルの精緻化に関する研究成果、および感度解析の予備調査に伴う研究成果をふまえ、そして、新たに開発を進めている超高分解能エアロゾルモデルを利用して、研究期間後半では、当初の計画を発展させる形で研究を遂行する。エアロゾル気候モデルMIROC-SPRINTARS、化学気候モデルMIROC-CHASER、SLCFs結合雲解像モデルNICAM-Chem、そして超高分解能エアロゾルモデルSCALE-SPRINTARSを階層的に用いて、SLCFsの気候影響を定量化するために、組成別・地域別・燃料起源や森林火災起源などの起源別に、それぞれ現実的な範囲内で関連排出量を変動させる大規模な感度実験を実施する。また、新たに開発しているSCALE-SPRINTARSでは、水平空間分解能を1km程度に設定することを想定しており、SLCFsで特に着目すべき領域でのシミュレーションを行うことで、エアロゾル・雲・降水相互作用の詳細を解析する。ただし、このような超高分解能数値モデルで、ある程度広域的なエアロゾルによる気候変動を評価した前例がないため、期待するパフォーマンスを発揮できない可能性がある一方で、予想のつかない画期的な研究結果をもたらす可能性もある。
本研究課題の成果は、気候変動緩和へ向けた国際的な潮流が加速しつつある中で、政策や一般社会活動に資する科学的知見を提供するという観点でも活用していく。例えば、研究代表者の竹村は、Asia Pacific Clean Air Partnership (APCAP)のScience Panel Memberを務めており、アジア・太平洋各国の環境政策決定者と直接的な接点があるため、本研究課題の成果を積極的に提供していく予定である。また、SLCFsに関わる気候モデル相互比較プロジェクトと連携して、国際的な学術コミュニティーの発展および気候変動政策に関わる科学的知見の提供に寄与する。
