| Outline of Research at the Start |
国定教科書の改訂、国語（標準語）の制定、唱歌の編纂、邦楽の復興――明治４０年代、文部省が主導した文教施策が次々と具体化している。本研究は、文部省の構想になる文教施策が実現するに際し辣腕を奮った、時の東京音楽学校長・湯原元一と、その周辺人物を対象とした思想史研究を行うものである。教育学、国文学、国語学、音楽学という４つの学問分野の狭間に取り残された記録と記憶を発掘し、複数の関係者の思惑が絡み合いながら、複数の施策が次々と具体化していった過程を確認する。それによって、明治４０年代の文教施策に関わる新たな知見を生み出したい。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The summary of this study is to further our understanding of the intellectual context surrounding Jinjo Shogaku-Shoka (Songs for Elementary Students) completed in June 1914. To that end, this study analyzed the writings of YUHARA Motoichi, president of Tokyo Music School and chief editor of the above compilation. YUHARA showed understanding for socialism as he harbored deep concern for the distress of the urban poor. He did not impose a state-centered, totalitarian structure on the people. Moreover, he recommended music not only as fine arts of the upper classes, but also as applied art with the purpose of comforting the lower classes. Further, he tried to encourager music teachers who were experts in schoolchildren’s songs, with the goal of raising their awareness as educators. The concerns of YUHARA and his fellow co-editors for the social problems of the 1910s are reflected in the gentleness manifested within Jinjo Shogaku-Shoka.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
『尋常小学唱歌』に対する理解を深めるにあたって、音楽史研究や音楽教育研究といった学問分野におけるこれまでの研究蓄積に加え、政治史・社会史・メディア史といった従来の唱歌研究で必ずしも参照されてこなかった学問分野の知見を積極的に取り込み、それらを思想史研究の観点から1つに統合して提示したところに本研究の学術的意義があったと考えている。また、新たな着眼によって得られた学問的知見を、国内学会や研究会においてのみならず国際学会の場において発信できたこと、さらには、展示会の企画と実現を通して当該科研費を活用して得られた学知を地域社会に還元できたところに本研究の社会的意義があったものと考える。
