中国と日本の支配秩序がせめぎ合う鹿児島・奄美および沖縄の島々をフィールドに、日本の近世社会を特徴付ける身分制を『家譜』との関係から検証し、どのような身分実態が境界領域において表出していたのかを明らかにするものである。検討に際し身分を裏付ける『家譜』の編纂過程を記憶・系譜の選択という観点から検証し、地域毎の論理を解明し比較する。さらにそれら近世日本または琉球における身分実態の特徴を非身分制社会であった他の東アジア諸国との関係からも捉え、境界における身分のありようを明らかにすることを目的とする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we investigated the status system in the Ryukyu Islands in the pre-modern period. In particular, we examined how the development and selection of status was conducted. This examination was based on the fact that the Ryukyu Islands are a border region where the ruling orders of both China and Japan overlapped.
The research was conducted intensively to clarify the phases of the Kagoshima and Ryukyuan-influenced Amami areas in particular.
As a result, the status in the Amami region was created based on the family origins in the medieval period and influenced by the ruling orders of Ryukyu and Kagoshima in the early modern period. It became clear that the family history was not fixed, but was restructured and strengthened as needed, and influenced the compilation of family histories.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
家譜を分析対象とした本研究により、①日中の境界領域であった琉球列島において身分は、中世以来の由緒をもとにしつつ、受容する支配秩序にあわせて選択的に創出されること。②創出後もかかる時代の状況や個人の要請にあわせ、再度の編成や創出が選択されうることが確認できた。
選択的な身分およびそれに根ざす身分意識の獲得は、国家間の緩衝地帯であり境界領域である琉球列島の身分制を特徴づけており、人びとのアイデンティティーは、ゆれ動きながら、ふさわしいと思う形に変容、追加され、時にそれは支配秩序間を選択的に行き来させる可能性を持つところに特徴を見いだせることが明らかとなった。
