従来、赤本、黒本、青本の順に装丁を順に変化させ、それに伴って質的にも変化・成熟していったという草双紙の文学史的定義を、現存する一次資料を調査することによって検証・評価し、草双紙の性質を捉え直す。草双紙享受の実態を明らかにすることによって、草双紙は草創期既にあらゆる要素を持ち合わせていたこと、時流を摂取する一方で、時代の変化に関係なく刊行され、享受されたものでもあったことを立証する。その上で、草双紙に一貫して通じる性質とは何かを検証し、文学史上の再評価を行う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
I determined whether the early Kusazoshi in Japan or abroad were printed and sold for the first time or the second time or later, based on the appearance of the books, and organized them with the information written by the owners at that time.
I have previously organized the signed Kusazoshi by Hikogoro Mitamura and attempted to determine when he purchased the books.This research collected and organized information on the time of purchase by the owners of the books at the time of their first printing and sale and those printed and sold after the second. As a result, we confirmed that it is reasonable to assume that lovers of kusazoshi composed their collections by simultaneously purchasing new works from the first printing and old works from later printings.We also focused on book paper as a new research method. We examined whether we could obtain information on the timing of book sales, which could not be obtained from printed information, and confirmed a certain level of validity.

草双紙は大田南畝『菊寿草』の言辞をもとに文学史上の定義が形成され、それが現在も各作品の評価基準として使用されている側面がある。
いわゆる黄表紙登場以前の初期草双紙については、黄表紙に比して素朴で他愛もない内容のものだと認識され、黄表紙の特殊性や優位性を強調する際の比較対象として示されることも多い。
本研究では、草双紙は時代と共に発展・洗練された、刊行時期によって性質が異なるなどの従来の草双紙研究の前提に対して疑問を投げかける点で学術的意義を有する。後摺本を含めた草双紙の流通の実態を踏まえると時代の変化に影響されない、普遍的な性質を持つ存在としての草双紙がみえてくる。
