本研究は三か年度を計画し、ハワイ日系人抑留・転居経験の既存の歴史叙述を考察し、新たな叙述を行う。どのように「記憶」が注目され忘れられたのかを検証するために、歴史的事実も含めて検証する。ハワイ日本文化センターやハワイ大学、日系アメリカ人市民連盟ホノルル支部などにより、1980年代ごろから収集されてきたオーラルヒストリー資料と、補償申請に関する法的文書などを用い、戦中戦後の「軍による立ち退き組」の経験を記述し、彼らの「記憶」の扱われ方を明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The study examined the wartime experiences of Japanese in Hawaii, with a particular focus on the experiences of those subjected to internment and displacement. The initial phase of the study involved the sourcing of materials from the Hawaii Japanese Cultural Center, University of Hawaii Hamilton Library, and Kamehameha School Archives. Due to the impact of the FY2020 COVID-19 pandemic, plans for FY2020 and FY2021 underwent substantial adjustments, with a shift towards organizing materials and writing papers, utilizing digital archives. In March and June 2021, peer-reviewed articles and online conference presentations were published. In FY2022, the relaxation of travel restrictions permitted participation in a workshop at Stanford University. In FY2023, the focus was on organizing the collected materials, continuing to gather data from the digital archive, and converting conference reports into published papers.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究では特に全体像が明らかになっていない「軍による立ち退き組」経験の解明を行った。本研究で収集したカネコ・ペーパーズは、1990 年代に JACL ホノルル支部長であったウィリアム・カネコが、非抑留者や「軍による立ち退き組」に対する補償申請を行ったときの資料で、未整理で未公開の資料であった。申請者は、過去に JCCH 資料室で4 年間ボランティアをした経験などから、現地団体と人的関係性の構築ができており、この資料の閲覧・使用も許可された。この資料の精査により、「軍による立ち退き組」の被害や経験を明らかにすることができ、米軍の存在が日常化されたハワイにおける市民と軍との関係性の考察に迫った。
