| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究では、従来「初期荘園」としてとらえられてきた８世紀中期～９世紀の荘園について、近年の大土地所有研究や地域史研究の進展をふまえて、７世紀以前の大土地所有との比較や、官衙・交通路に関する周辺地域の情報の集約・利用を通じて、形成過程・分布・特性・機能・経営様態を総合的に復原し、「律令制下の荘園」として再定義することを最大の目標とする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to comprehensively investigate the "Manors under the Ritsuryo System." It involved examining the large-scale land management in the 8th century through analysis and on-site investigations, as well as exploring the land management and land system of preceding and subsequent periods, along with their underlying factors.It also obtained research results including source studies for studying the expansion of manors in the late Heian period, comprising four books (co-authored), six articles (including one single-authored and five co-authored), and three book reviews.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、「初期荘園」として把握されてきた8世紀中期～9世紀の荘園について、大化以前の大土地所有や、平安後期の荘園との関係も含めてとらえ直す意義を有しており、日本列島の歴史の中でも重要な要素である大土地所有の歴史的展開を把握するための基盤となりうる研究である。また、本研究で得られた知見と他地域のあり方を比較検討することによって、関連する学問分野の発展にも寄与しうる。さらに本研究は、古代の地域の歴史的環境の復原によって地域の歴史資産を見直す契機ともなり得るものであり、研究の過程で明らかとなった前近代日本の土地と人の関わりを通じて現代における環境問題を再考する一助となることも期待できる。
