本研究は、相模大山参詣の木太刀奉納習俗発生と大山寺縁起を素材として、山岳参詣地における御師の役割と身分的性格を明らかにすることを目的とする。
木太刀奉納は、大山参詣が庶民の間に浸透する習俗であり、大山寺縁起縁起は、家康の寺社統制から家光治世の寺社造営政策へ転換する時期に見られる現象である。2019年に調査収集、2020年に史料分析、2021年研究会・学会誌発表を行う計画である。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study discusses the practice of offering long wooden Tachi swords and the role which Oshi priests played in Sagami-Oyama in early-modern times─Part(1)─and the Tokugawa government's religious policy and the process of Oyama Oshi priests attaining higher ranks in society─Part (2). Part (1) carries reports on the shapes, the dedicators and the chronology of twenty-two long wooden Tachi swords preserved in the Kanto region, with reference to documentary records on these swords. Details of the gradual changes in the practice are printed in "Chiba Historical Science" (No.81). My view as to the origin of the practice of offering long wooden Tachi swords was published in "Collected Theories of Drama" (Vol. 76), where I concluded that the practice dates back to Genroku 15-Kyouho 2, based on "Writing by Myself" by Ichikawa Danjuro the First (Genroku 6), the Oyama Temple Rules, and the behavior of Oshi priests.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
絵馬は、馬図・社寺参詣図・武者絵・船絵馬・算額などのように社寺に祈願・報謝のために奉納されるのが一般的であり、山岳参詣地において様々なものがみられるが、江戸時代の相模大山寺へ隅田川で水垢離を済ませ木太刀を奉納する固有の習俗が大流行していた。この木太刀に関しては、沼野嘉彦(1979)や吉岡清司(1992)らの研究があるが、これらは建久３年の北条政子の安産祈願に依ったものに過ぎない。本研究は、この習俗の発生起源と現存木太刀の調査・整理を明らかにし、木太刀奉納の拡大には、御師の媒介や御師の行動が鍵となるとの仮説に立つ。
