Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、従来よりも説得力・実効性のある博物館の総合的害虫管理(IPM)体制の提案を目指す。そのために、各種文化財害虫の生態・食害・行動に関わる基礎実験データを取得し、個体群動態モデル(個体数の時間的・空間的変化をモデル化したもの)・食害モデル・行動モデルを構築する。また、各種文化財害虫に対する薬剤の有効使用量を調査する。以上のモデルおよび実験データに基づき、文化財害虫によるリスクの予測、トラップ調査に基づいた生息個体数推定、および薬剤散布の必要性・必要量評価を可能とすることを目的とする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

It is important for museums and other institutions that conserve cultural properties to prevent insect damages to collections based on the principles of integrated pest management (IPM). However, because of the lack of fundamental knowledge of the biology of insect pests that damage cultural properties, it remains difficult to grasp the actual population size of pests in a certain area or to fully estimate the risk from pest occurrences. This research project aims to clarify the life history and feeding characteristics of insect pests that consume materials, such as wood, bamboo, and paper, to provide fundamental findings that could be used to propose a more convincing and effective IPM scheme.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

文化財の活用が推し進められる中で、博物館等の間における収蔵品の貸し借りがますます盛んになると考えられる。そのため、あらゆる博物館等がIPM体制を整備し、害虫被害の予防に取り組むことがこれまで以上に重要となっている。本研究で得られた文化財害虫に関する基礎的知見は、文化財害虫による被害の重大さを博物館・文化財関係者に周知したり、現場において害虫個体数を許容レベル以下に抑えられているかを判断したりするための根拠となることが期待できる。
