国際留学生移動が日常的に行われ、留学目的と就労目的の移動の境界が曖昧になる中、留学生受入国・送出し国双方の文脈に即した研究が不足している。留学生移動と国際労働移動の研究も十分に関連付けられていない。本研究では、新興の留学生受け入れ国であるマレーシアに焦点を当て、送り出しトップ国であるバングラデシュからの留学生移動のマクロな視点を、経済政治社会情勢や高等教育事情等から明らかにする。また移民個人の経験というミクロな視点を、元留学生や関係者へのライフストーリー・インタビューにて明らかにする。両者を架橋する「国際移民システム」を、後発開発途上国から新興国への留学生移動に着目してモデル化する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to analyze international student mobility, focusing on the structuring of the "Systems approach to international migration" by international students in an emerging country, Malaysia, with an emphasis on the background of their country of origin. In development studies, the integration of immigrants into host societies has been considered as the loss of ties to the society of origin, and the contribution of immigrants to development has been considered to be realized only through return migration. This study shows that the social networks established by former international students can contribute to increased access to external resources for their countries of origin. I also focused on the mobility of people from a developed country to an emerging country to examine the Systems approach to international migration from multiple perspectives, and presented the positive aspects of the dual "plural society" as a new paradigm for international student mobility.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
「周辺」と見なされた国の高等教育機関が、同じく「周辺」の国から多数の留学生を受け入れ、定着させることによって出身国の開発を促進する側面があること、また「中心」的な国から「周辺」的な国への留学生受け入れによって、二重の「複合社会」が肯定的な側面をもたらし得ることを、国際留学生移動の新たなパラダイムとして提示した。
また社会的意義として、国際教育の促進は、社会背景が異なるとはいえ、日本等の非英語圏にとっても参考になる上、今後マレーシアのような国が、日本人高校生・大学生の留学先という意味と同時に、留学生受け入れ国日本の競合相手という意味でも、新たな選択肢として浮上してくる可能性が示唆される。
