Outline of Research at the Start

A practical study investigating time and visual literacy in uses of photomedia during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games. Visiting locations in photos of regions worst affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, participatory rephotography and a range of photomedia are used to explore changes in affected towns before, during and after the games, and to reflect upon their public reception. Documentation and findings presented to international audiences as an exhibition, photobook and articles aim to promote global public and scholarly awareness of temporality and photomedia literacy.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Due to a decrease of COVID-19 cases in Japan in the fall, PHASE TWO of the research was completed in November 2020 with a modified workshop. Four international students visited Kamaishi and Ofunato for a five-day photomedia workshop. The purpose was to test the structure to be used in PHASE THREE of the research during the re-scheduled Tokyo 2021 Olympics. A draft photobook was also produced after each location. Although access was hindered by global circumstances, virtual tools (e.g. Google Street View) were also adopted. The temporality of this technology was explored in one desktop film (‘Some Time in Ofunato’) and two conference papers (IVLA 2020 and ADADA 2020). The desktop film also received an ‘Excellent Presentation’ award at the ADADA conference.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation in Japan, the research could only progress when it was less risky to travel between prefectures. This meant that plans for PHASE THREE of the research had to be postponed until it was clear that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games were to actually take place. The PI is monitoring the situation for possible changes while also tentatively seeking out participants for the workshop in PHASE THREE.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

At present, the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games are planned to take place between July and August 2021. PHASE THREE of the research is expected to comprise a five-day rephotography workshop in Kamaishi during this time. Research into virtual photomedia tools is also expected to continue alongside the main research. It is hoped that a physical exhibition of results can be presented in Kamaishi in March 2022 as well as a physical exhibition overseas although this plan depends on the international COVID-19 situation. Online methods of engaging international audience will also continue to be explored. The ongoing collection of photobooks produced so far will be developed further during this time and ways identified to share them online as well.
