Outline of Research at the Start

This research aims to explore the representations of families and parenting in a selection of literary texts by contemporary Japanese women authors. It uses feminist theory to “queer” the family; that is, it applies a mode of questioning to literary representations to expand the concept of family.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Thanks to this grant, I was able to continue with my research on the representations of the female body experience comprised in my doctoral dissertation through increasing my literary sample and adding a focus on family formations. All my research papers, presentations and events are connected to the analysis of representations of families, parenting, and related embodied experience (for example, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and care) in a selection of literary texts by contemporary Japanese women authors. I use feminist theory to “queer” the family; that is, I questioned literary representations to expand the concept of family.
The contemporary Japanese authors selected for this research project are: Kirino Natsuo (b.1951), Ito Hiromi (b. 1955), Kawakami Mieko (b. 1976), Murata Sayaka (b.1979) and Matsuda Aoko (b.1979).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
