Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、アジア産の霊長類種を対象に、特殊化したオス形質発現に潜む、行動生態基盤や性認知、進化原理について、蓄積された長期生態観測と認知行動実験を融合して探索する。また、アジアを舞台とした、新しい国際拠点形成も目標とする。性淘汰原理の理解には、生態学や認知科学、数理モデルなど、領域横断的方法が不可欠である。これを契機として、既にアジア各国に調査基盤を構築している日濠の研究者網を拡充発展させ、アジア霊長類学会の発足とけん引を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

霊長類の重層社会は、安定した核となる複数の群れが離合集散しながら、行動をともにする高次の集団のことである。霊長類において社会が重層化した種は限られており、そのどの種においても性的二型が顕著であるという共通した特徴がある。そこで、霊長類社会の重層化原理と性的二型の関係性を解明するため、野生テングザルの重層社会に関する詳細な観察と分析を行った。具体的には、マレーシアのサバ州に生息するテングザルのハーレム型の群れ8群と、オスだけから形成される群れ1群（全オス群）の直接観察と、採取した糞の遺伝子解析から個体間の社会関係や血縁度等を検討した。その結果、テングザルは霊長類では極めて珍しい、父系的な基盤を有する重層社会を形成している可能性が示唆された。厳格な縄張りをかまえて暮らす霊長類種よりも、重層社会を形成するテングザルでは、必然的にオス同士の距離は近くなり、 オス間のメスを巡る競争は熾烈であると考えられる。そのような競争を避ける仕組みとして進化したのが、オスの大きな鼻と体格であり、大きな鼻と体格というオスの強さを示す「勲章」により、オス同士は互いの強さを間接的に推し量り、無駄な争いを避けていることが示唆された。本成果のような、重層社会の進化機構の解明は、ヒトを代表として幅広い霊長類に見られる性選択という共通原理の解明にも寄与する可能性がある。上述した成果に加えて、性的二型の進化が、繁殖にかかわる雄間競合と雌選択という性選択に加え、食物獲得にかかわる自然選択との相互作用で生じた可能性を検討するため、多数の霊長類種の骨格標本の計測を実施し、その分析も現在おこなっている。

Reason

重層社会の詳細な構造が明らかになったことで、当初予定していた、霊長類の社会性と性的二型の関係性についての議論が進展した。また、性的二型の進化が、繁殖にかかわる雄間競合と雌選択という性選択に加え、食物獲得にかかわる自然選択との相互作用で生じた可能性を検討するためのデータ収集も概ね完了した。以上のことより、おおむね順調に進展していると判断した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

最終年度のため、性的二型の進化が、繁殖にかかわる雄間競合と雌選択という性選択に加え、食物獲得にかかわる自然選択との相互作用で生じた可能性を検討するために収集したデータの分析を完了し、論文として出版するための準備を急ぐ予定である。また、性的二型の進化にかかわる、認知的な基盤を解明していくための実験データを補足的に収集する。加えて、タイ王国に生息するベニガオザルの性的二型に関する行動データについても、補足的に収集を行う。以上の一部不足しているデータ収集を完了し、年度内に論文として出版することを目指す。
