Research Abstract |
Our project,"The Atlantic History in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries : in the Perspective of Cultural Borderland" aims to explore the world which was born in the North Atlantic in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in the perspective of cultural borderlands. We wish to accept the Atlantic as a whole and to write a total history of the Atlantic, by connecting the small communities at the both seaboard areas to several networks of the Atlantic. We have had more than 20 research project seminars with presentations and deep discussions for the past four years. And at the final stage of the project, we held International Maritime History Symposium,"Maritime Networks in the North Atlantic.". The aim is to present the recent research and to generate a debate on how we can contribute to the maritime history in the North Atlantic, especially, focusing on the maritime networks which were interwoven with one another in the whole Atlantic. I wish to add that we published The Atlantic History in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries : In the Perspective of Cultural Borderland, as a report of research project, edited by Kikuyo Tanaka, in March 2012.
