Research Abstract |
This study addressed the US military base issues in Japan from a gender perspective. The issues have been seen as "political" or at the "public" sphere but it focused on its "private" sphere and family history not been discussed enough before, bridging the gap between the two spheres and looking into women's life histories. Miyake interviewed key persons in Iwakuni and recorded their oral life histories. Fujime conducted a historical research of female victims during the occupation period and wrote a book titled "US Military Base in Iwakuni and Women History." Koketsu overviewed the role of the Iwakuni base within a framework of US-Japan Mutual Cooperation Treaty. Yoshimoto examined the US media coverage of the US bases in Japan and clarified how Iwakuni and Okinawa had been reported in the New York Times. The private sphere of military base issues has been latent. The series of interviews and primary source research attempted to articulate it and the media analysis explored a case that the private sphere turns into the public sphere.
