Research Abstract |
We raised a question whether plants exhibit evolutionaryadaptation to elevated CO_2. We studied plants from natural CO_2 springs, where plantshave been exposed to elevated CO_2 over generation. We found that plants from high CO2area around CO_2 springs have smaller stomata, low maximal stomatal conductance, lowphotosynthetic rates at low CO_2, and higher leaf to root ratio. A meta analysis revealed thatsuch differences are common across different CO2 springs irrespective of species.Competition experiment demonstrated that plants from high CO_2 area are morecompetitive at elevated CO_2. These results suggest that plants evolutionarily adapt toelevated CO_2 conditions.
