Research Abstract |
In this project I divided American sea literature into three categories based on the features of the oceanic environment?the surface, the edge, and the interior of the ocean?to examine how the oceanic environment and the aesthetic and thematic qualities of literature interact. This approach enabled me not only to evaluate sea literature extensively but also to reevaluate traditional American literary approaches and practices from the oceanic point of view. By reevaluating the rather underestimated roles of oceanic activities and imagination in American literature, I tried to expand the scholarship on American sea literature; while doing so, I believe my approach will lead to a re-examination of American sea literature itself as I inevitably analyze how American terrestrial/oceanic experiences and imagination correlate or compete with each other through the development of American literature and culture.
