本研究は、加速する時代のなかで西洋社会の「世俗」が新局面に入ったという認識の地平に立ち、多様な地理的文脈を考慮しながら、「世俗的なもの」と「宗教的なもの」の再編の諸相を比較研究するものである。ヨーロッパ大陸とアメリカ大陸の政教体制を規定している歴史的文脈の違いを構造的に踏まえ、いわゆる地理的「欧米」地域における世俗と宗教の関係を正面から扱いつつ、周辺や外部からの視点も重視し、「西洋」のあり方を改めて問う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research clarified various aspects of the Western reorganization of the “secular” and the “religious” from the following three perspectives. (1) The reconfiguration of “religious traditions,” especially in the Catholic cultural sphere. (2) The way in which Muslims, who have been “marginalized” in the West, have become entrenched in Western society, while facing to conflicts with their society. (3) Analysis of the ways in which religion and secularity are being reorganized, taking into account the growing number of non-religious people in Western societies.
In this research, we have examined the historical development of the “secular” period. We have not taken the concept of “religion” in the “secular” era as self-evident, but rather, we have specifically depicted various aspects of the relationship between the “religious” and the “secular” in the “post-secular” era based on various examples from the Western world.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
従来の研究では、私たちが理解している「宗教」が、西洋の世俗的な近代の時代の刻印を強く受けていることは強調されてきたが、世俗の時代の歴史的な展開につれて、「宗教的なもの」や「世俗的なもの」が、西洋においても流動化してきていることについては十分な関心が払われてこなかった。本研究では、「世俗」の時代の「宗教」概念を自明視せず、「ポスト世俗」の時代における「宗教的なもの」と「世俗的なもの」の関係の諸相を西洋世界のさまざまな事例をもとに具体的に描き出すことによって、「世俗」や「世俗的なもの」をも包み込んだ宗教研究のあり方を示すことができた。
