Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、英語での学業従事や研究遂行上欠かせない要約の書きかたの学習・指導と評価のための大学英語アカデミック・ライティング授業用オンライン教材を開発し、その妥当性を検証する。潤沢な学習者用フィードバックを特徴とする学習管理システム(LMS)用教材を作成し、国内複数大学に在籍する学生の教材学習記録や教員インタビュー結果などを多方向から分析することで、本教材で提供する要約学習・練習メニューや解答フィードバックを介した学習の効果と、教材使用者(教員と学生)の視点からの本教材の意義を実証的に検証する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of the present study was to design and develop an online module for the undergraduate-level instruction and formative assessment of summary writing skills, which are essential for academic work and research activities in a second language. This module, W-Writing, delivers four different types of content feedback on learner-generated summaries during the revision stage. By adopting a mixed-methods research design, a series of empirical validation studies have yielded evidence supporting the quality of the feedback delivered in this module and its use in academic writing courses at universities in Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では要約学習・指導や教材開発に精通する応用言語学研究者と、フィードバック生成技術を持つ計算言語学研究者が協働する文理連携型プロジェクトとして実施した。その複雑さから指導・評価が難しいと言われがちな要約ライティングだが、本研究で作成した明確な要約ライティング評価基準や、要約内容に関するフィードバックとその活用に関する実証データは、先行研究が限定的な本テーマの研究推進に資する知見を提供するものである。また本研究で得られたデータセットの一部公開は研究の透明性を高め、教材(W-Writing)の運用開始は効果的な授業実践に寄与することが期待できる。
