| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、我が国の絵画史において非常に重要な位置を占める法隆寺金堂壁画の今後の保存・活用に関する検討を行うために必要な壁体、下地層、彩色材料の構造・材質及び劣化状態を正確に把握することを目的とする。そのために、白鳳時代を代表する壁画であり、火災に遭ったという共通点をもつ法隆寺金堂壁画と国指定史跡 上淀廃寺跡から出土された壁画片を調査対象とし、美術史の研究者とも連携をしつつ、可搬型分析措置を用いてそれらの構造・材質を非破壊・非接触な手法で明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to obtain a more accurate understanding and to examine the future preservation and utilization of the Horyuji Kondo mural paintings, which occupy a very important position in the history of Japanese paintings. This research uses non-invasive analysis methods to examine the structure, materials, and state of deterioration of the mural paintings. Among non-invasive analytical methods, this research focused on two-dimensional spectroscopic analysis using a hyperspectral camera, and evaluated its performance and safety. We conducted an analytical investigation of some of the Horyuji Kondo mural paintings at the Horyuji Temple.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
文化財の科学調査では試料採取が許可されず、非破壊・非接触を大前提とした調査手法を要求されることが非常に多い。しかも、法隆寺内の壁画収蔵庫で保管されている大壁と小壁については、資料を移動させることも不可能である。本研究で実践した非破壊・非接触による現地調査のノウハウは法隆寺金堂壁画のみならず、古墳壁画、屏風等の絵画作品、油彩画等の移動が困難な文化財の科学調査にもそのまま適用することが可能である。よって本研究により、文化財科学や美術史の分野における新たな知見が得られることにとどまらず、国民の財産である貴重な文化財の活用方法の可能性の飛躍的な拡大など、社会への大きな波及効果を期待することができる。
