Outline of Research at the Start

我々の身の回りには、構成要素が乱雑に配置したまま固化してしまった物質が多数ある。その代表的な形態として、(1)構造ガラス、(2)物理ゲル、(3)粉体の三つを取り上げる。これらの系は全て、乱れた粒子配置のまま固化した物質と言えるが、それぞれ(1)高密度な斥力粒子系、(2)低密度な引力粒子系、(3)散逸粒子系、という特徴を持つ。本研究では、大規模なシミュレーションや理論的な考察により、これらの系の低エネルギー励起の性質を明らかにする。さらにその知見に基づいて、特異な固化動力学や弾性・塑性を物理的に理解することを目指す。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

There exists a vast number of random systems in our world. “Structural glass”, such as silicate glass and polymer glass, is a densely packed random solid. “Physical gel”, such as polymer gel and colloidal gel, is a tenuous random solid. “Granular material”, such as sand pile, is a dissipative random solid. These random solids have been studied separately in their own context. By contrast, this work systematically studied these systems focusing on their low-energy excitations, whose understanding have recently advanced much. In particular, we studied the mechanical properties (rheology, viscoelasticity) and relaxation dynamics of these systems and obtained several new theoretical results.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

構造ガラス・物理ゲル・粉体は、自然界に遍在する物質群である。従来研究では、これらの物質群が個別的に研究されてきた。一方で本研究では、ガラス系の低エネルギー励起の理解の進展に基づき、これらの物質群を同じ土俵上で系統的に研究した。各研究で得られた成果は、多くの学術雑誌に公表されている。例えば、異常粘性散逸の理論、Johari-Goldstein緩和の理解、物理ゲルの低エネルギー励起の解明など、新規かつ独自な成果が多く、その学術的意義は高い。さらに本研究の統一的なアプローチは、これらの物質群に対する俯瞰的な視座を提供しており、そこに独自の学術的・社会的意義がある。
