Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、ビッグデータを堅牢な統計的手法によって解析することで、生物多様性の気候変動に対する応答を調べる。具体的には、北米大陸約4万調査区、そこでモニタリングされた220万個体の樹木、その60年間にわたる非常に大規模なデータを扱う（※アジア諸国では森林モニタリングの歴史は浅く、また、欧州では天然植生が少ないうえ、データがカバーする気候帯の幅も狭い）。本研究は、北米大陸における亜寒帯・温帯・亜熱帯など、広域な気候区分における森林の生物多様性および生態系機能に与えるインパクトを評価する。そのため、本研究の成果は地球上におけるさまざま気候区分に属する森林に対して幅広い汎用性をもたらすと期待される。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

カナダの森林モニタリングデータを解析し、【目的1】気候変動が自然林の樹木の多様性に与える影響、および【目的2】気候変動が自然林の生態系機能（成長量）に与える影響は樹木の機能的多様性および機能的冗長性を高めることで緩和されるか、ということを調べた。
【目的1】では、プロットレベルにおける森林の樹木の種多様性およびその回転率を応答変数、長期気候変動（時間的気候因子）、地理的気候勾配（空間的気候因子）、林齢、およびそれらの交互作用を説明変数に、線形混合モデルを用いて解析を行った。【目的2】では、プロットレベルにおける森林の成長量を応答変数、長期気候変動（時間的気候因子）、林齢、機能的多様性（または機能的冗長性）、機能的組成、およびそれらの交互作用を説明変数に、線形混合モデルを用いて解析を行った。
その結果、【目的1】温帯林では、北方林と比べてより速い速度で樹種の変化が生じていること、および【目的2】気候変動、とくに乾燥化が森林成長量に与えるマイナスの影響は、機能的多様性ではなく機能的冗長性によって軽減されることがわかった。【目的1】は解析途中であり、【目的２】は学術誌投稿に向けて執筆中である。
なお、両研究の促進を図るため、2022年2月から7月にかけて「Japanese-Swiss Science and Technology Programme：Young Researchers Exchange Programme between Japan and Switzerland」を通してスイス連邦工科大学陸域生態系研究科において在外研究を行った（ホスト研究者：生態系管理学グループ Jaboury Ghazoul 教授）。
さらに、研究の拡大を図るため、日本国内の森林モニタリングデータを解析し、気候変動が森林の生態系機能（中国・中山大学との共同研究）および生物多様性（オーストリア国立大学との共同研究）に与える影響についても調べた。
