Outline of Research at the Start

For elaborating the carbohydrates transport process, we labelled the 13C in photoassimilates which synthesised in mature bamboos. Then used the Picarro to measure the bamboo’s culms net photosynthesis and belowground, which included rhizomes, roots, and soil, respiration. Now we are collecting the samples from bamboos leaves, branches, culms, rhizomes, roots, and bamboo shoots and constructing the laboratory analysis procedure (LAP) for the pretreatment of analysing 13C in nonstructural and structural carbohydrates of biomass.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We got 4 major research achievements in the series of studies:
[1] Young bamboos received carbon (C) from rhizome systems when they faced the first cold stress in October and proposed the hypothesis of nursing behaviour in Phyllostachys edulis (Carriere) J. Houz. (P. edulis).
[2] The main C source, which formed with limited CO2 concentrating mechanism (CCM), of young bamboo shoots and developing culms is surely supplied from rhizome systems by the evidence of natural δ13C values and 13C pulse labelling around developing culms.
[3] we directly got the evidence that C transported from mature bamboo to young bamboo shoots and helped them to form structural carbons of attached leaves, and further quantified the ratio of 13C allocation in mature bamboo, and the amount of exporting into other belowground systems by a compartmental model with 13C budget (C13C) approach, which adjusted a method that could ingeniously avoid irrational numbers causing unstable output results of the model.
[4] The intentionality of C transmission was revealed by 13C pulse labelling and observed the allocated amount of 13C transferred from leaves and branches to culms between autumn and winter which perhaps indicated that culms are the major C stock pool gradient transferred those C stocks to other sinks via rhizome systems. Further, we quantified the seasonal dynamics of C allocation in the P. edulis stand via a partial equilibrium model for carbon allocation of seasonal dynamics in forest ecosystem (PEMCAFE) approach.
We then finally elaborated on the nursing behaviour and C allocation in P. edulis.
