本研究は、民藝運動の父とされる柳宗悦に薫陶を受け、染色家芹沢銈介に師事した後、著作活動と並行して「型染め版画」制作を展開した岡村吉右衛門(1916-2002)を取り上げる。岡村は琉球、アイヌ文化に関心を寄せ、東南アジア、中南米、アフリカでのフィールドワークを通じ、染色はもとより工芸各種の研究を行い、多くの著作を著した。著作活動で知られる一方、その理論に裏打ちされた独自の紙染めによる「型染め版画」作品の紹介は、 90年代までほとんどなかった。本研究では、型染め版画の初期にあたる私家本における図像、テキストの相関関係の検証を行う。これによって岡村の作品の世界観の源を明らにし、岡村研究の礎とする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
I examined the interrelationship among images and text, production techniques, dyeing and coloring methods, and bookbinding in the private collection that Kichiemon Okamura (1916-2002) began developing in the 1940s. As a result, it was found that the same colors in some parts were used for both the text and the images, that the text was not separated from the images and became decorative, and that the specifications of the bookbindings were related to the production development of ”Ideographs”.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
岡村が1940年代に型染めによる「私家本」の制作において試行錯誤を重ねて、本という実用的なメディアから、1970年代以降の「型染め版画」による「絵文字」への展開を考察することができた。また、「私家本」の作品群と関連資料には無形文化財のみならず、無形の民俗文化財に関する側面も確認された。今後、これらの記録や保存、展覧会等での活用により、文化財の保護にも期待できる。
