本研究の目的は、少女マンガ黎明期に活躍した戦前生まれの女性作家たちが「外国」や「戦争」のイメージをどう描いてきたのかを、作品の内容分析および関係者へのインタビュー調査をもとに実証的に明らかにすることである。少女マンガの黎明期となる1950年代から1960年代に活躍した女性作家に焦点を当て、貸本や雑誌の資料調査を行う。また、関係者への聞き取り調査を行い、その声を次世代に遺す。とくに、当時の作家たちが描いた日本以外の国＝「外国」への憧憬と、女性作家たちの「戦争」体験との関連を掘り下げる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study seeks to empirically examine how female manga artists born before World War II, who were active during the “Early Phase” (reimeiki) of shojo manga, represented images of “foreign countries” and “war” in their works. Through an in-depth analysis of the creations of early pioneering artists--such as Masako Watanabe, Eiko Hanamura, Miyako Maki, Akiko Mure, and Hideko Mizuno--it elucidates the extent to which each artist’s personal experiences of war influenced their subsequent creative output. Furthermore, it reveals how, in the context of a society emerging from the devastation of war and grappling with poverty, the vivid and luxuriant depictions of “foreign countries” in shojo manga conveyed a profound yearning shared by both authors and readers alike.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究では、少女マンガの黎明期に活躍した女性作家たちが「外国」や「戦争」をどのように描き、マンガ史にどのような足跡を残したのかについて調査を重ねてきた。その結果、少女マンガ黎明期に関する研究内容について、日本国内での出版（2023年、青土社）と英語圏の読者に向けた出版（2025年、Palgrave Macmillan）が実現し、黎明期の作家たちが果たしたマンガ史における先駆的な役割について再検討する機会となった。これまで注目されてこなかった少女マンガというジャンルの黎明期に光を当てることで、マンガ文化・出版文化をはじめとした戦後日本のメディア文化研究に新たな知見を加えることができた。
