本研究においては、2017年にノーベル文学賞を受賞した、現代英国を代表する小説家カズオ・イシグロの文学における音楽の影響や役割についての解明を試みる。作家としてデビューする以前、イシグロはシンガーソングライターを志し、多くの作詞を試みている。この青年時代の作詞活動に着目し、それを後年の執筆活動の原点と捉えて両者の関係性を探究することにより、あるいは当時イシグロが受けたアメリカ音楽の影響を分析することにより、従来のイシグロ研究にはない新たな視点からの解釈を試みる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The three collaborative researchers aimed to explore various influences and roles of music in the literature of Kazuo Ishiguro, a leading contemporary British novelist. Before his debut as a writer, Ishiguro aspired to be a singer-songwriter, and this activity in his youth was the starting point for his subsequent artistic creativity. Starting from analyses of numerous lyrics written by Ishiguro, we independently took various approaches, such as extracting his memories of Nagasaki, the origin of his life, from the lyrics, delving into the influences American music culture had on him, and investigating his works of fiction that use music as motifs. This project revealed an unprecedented image of Ishiguro emerging from these approaches.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
2017年にノーベル文学賞を受賞して以来、イシグロに関する学術的研究は急速な進展の様相を見せ、また彼や彼の作品群に対する社会的関心も大幅に高まっているが、そうした中で本研究は従来とは異なる独創的な視座を提示するものである。文学と音楽の接点の探究というジャンル横断的アプローチを試みることによって、国内外で展開するイシグロ研究における新局面を切り開くとともに、公開講座等を通して新たな知見を公的に還元することでイシグロのさらなる社会的受容に貢献することができた。
