2017年度～2019年度に実施したグリーン文学のナラティヴ解析をさらに発展させるべく、いくつかの課題を抽出する。①病者視点の物語に加え、その人物を見守る者、あるいは影響を及ぼし合う関係にある者、密接な関係にある者の物語に注目する。②作品における病者のQOLの向上について、個人の価値観および物語の状況から考察する。③病者のトータルペインについて分析する。④個人にとっての癒しと回復の多様性を吟味し、具体的に抽出、検討する。このように、より専門性の高いテーマに注目してグリーン文学を再分析し、医療倫理教育に応用することで、医療系学生が物語精読を通じて実際的な医療テーマを考察する糸口を提供する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Through close readings of Graham Greene’s novels, this study extracted and analyzed the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual suffering experienced by characters from the perspective of total pain. It also explored how these forms of suffering relate to concepts such as quality of life (QOL), well-being, and emotional responses--including pity, sympathy, empathy, and compassion--highlighting the educational value of literature in deepening understanding of patients. Drawing on these literary analyses, medical ethics education was continuously implemented with perspectives from Narrative Medicine and Medical Humanities. Through activities such as discussions, classroom debates, and reflective writing, the study aimed to foster in medical students a more empathetic and multifaceted approach to patients’ emotions and the complex ethical challenges they face, while also cultivating critical thinking.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、グレアム・グリーン作品に描かれた登場人物の身体的・精神的・社会的・霊的苦痛(トータルペイン)を抽出・分析することで、苦痛の多面性や主観性を可視化し、患者理解を深める文学的アプローチの有効性を明らかにした点に学術的意義がある。また、Narrative MedicineやMedical Humanitiesに基づく医療倫理教育を通じて、医学生が患者や家族と向き合う際に求められる共感・思いやり・倫理的想像力を養うことを目指した。こうした教育実践により、臨床現場で直面する複雑な倫理的課題に多面的かつ柔軟に取り組む態度や、患者中心のケアを志向する姿勢を育むことに貢献した点に社会的意義がある。
