Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、近代イギリスにおいて「共感」の心性が、政治的・社会的文脈のなかでどのように定義されたかを、18世紀後半から19世紀前半までの文学を中心とした言説のなかから抽出し、措定することを目的とする。「共感」は啓蒙思想において社会的美徳として称揚され、「感受性文化」のなかでも「同情」「憐憫」「情操」「仁愛」とともに道徳的価値を付与され、文学作品内にも組み込まれていく。社会との接面上で文学テクストが生成されるとき、そうした「共感」の言語がどのように機能しているのか。それを社会思想史の観点から文学研究において解明する。
