| Outline of Research at the Start |
話法の研究は、近代の小説が中心的に行われ、その発達過程の調査は少ない。中世の韻文は殆ど扱われず、特に意味論では、Fludernik (1993, 1996)やMoore (2015)により部分的な検証がある程度で、チョーサーでの体系立てた調査は殆どなされていない。話法の設定の切り替えは、多くの場合その言語の意味を変容させ、話法は本質的に意味論の問題である。本研究では、話法を意味付けるタグを精緻化し、そのタグを多様な社会層の巡礼者が話をし、話法の多様性が見られる『カンタベリー物語』、これまでの研究で作成した電子化された4テクスト、Hg, El写本及び刊本に付加し、話法の意味論コーパスを構築する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We attempted to construct the Semantic Corpus of Speech and Thought Representation of the earliest manuscripts of Hg and El and the editions, Blake (1980) and Benson (1987) of the Canterbury Tales. Our investigations are in two ways, quantitative and qualitative. The former quantitative focused on verbs of speaking to introduce direct/indirect speech, modifying structures of those verbs, their tense (past/present), their syntactic positions, structural features of speeches (address, interjection, imperative, interrogative, exclamatory sentences, ellipses). The latter qualitative focused on narrative parts (tense, modality) and pointed out the diffusion of textual subjectivities. The similarities and dissimilarities between the manuscripts Hg, El and the editions, Blake and Benson were investigated. The dissimilarities were most frequently observed particularly in narrative parts with regard to tense and modality.

英文学史において話法は語りにおいて書き手の事態再生の根源的問題であるが、歴史的な観点に立った考察はFludernik, Fleischman、Moore等に先駆的な研究があるものの、未だ不十分である。チョーサーにおいても例外ではない。写本の異同も捉えた研究は更に不十分である。本研究は、最も古い写本、Hgとその刊本Blake (1980)とElとそれを基盤にした刊本Benson (1987)の電子データに基づき話法の意味論コーパスを構築した。タグ付けは量的に可能なものと質的な解釈を要するものに二分された。本研究はチョーサー及び中英語文学の話法研究をデジタル化とその分析において一層発展させた。、
