本研究は、難民の経験がどのように人類の記憶として残るのか、いかにして歴史として記述されるのかという大きな問いを、実例に即して明らかにする試みである。具体的には、第一次世界大戦直後にはじまったギリシア・トルコ戦争で発生した難民に焦点を当てる。彼らは国際連盟監視下のもと、世界史上初めて実施された「強制的」住民交換の対象となった人々である。本研究では、特に小アジアのギリシア系正教徒難民に注目する。彼らがみずからの体験――具体例として1922年の日本船による難民救済がある――をいかに記憶し、それがどのように歴史として再構成されていったのか、その過程を探ることを目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Historical research based on oral sources constantly raises the question of whether a historian can guarantee objectivity. Contemporary Euro-American sources refer to the rescue operation of Greek Orthodox Christian refugees by a Japanese ship. However, evidence from Japan is indispensable to prove the rescue activities by the Japanese ship Tokei Maru was not a "misremembering" or made-up story, but a historical fact.

第一次世界大戦直後に始まったギリシア・トルコ戦争時に発生した難民の記憶に注目して、。人々の共通の体験が記憶として定着し、歴史として記述されていく過程とその具体的な内容を検討した本研究は、バルカン戦争から1920年代末までの時期に東地中海で見られた人の大移動の全体像を解明する一歩となるだけでなく、今日の難民問題研究全般に対し興味深い事例を提供することになるだろう。さらに、ヨーロッパ史、オスマン帝国史、トルコ史、日本史、海運史を横断する本研究は、グローバル・ヒストリーの視野からこの時代を俯瞰する契機を与えるものとなる。
