バティックに関する研究はその芸術性の高さに注目した文化的な研究が中心であり、歴史的な研究、特にオランダ植民地期については十分な関心が寄せられていない。本研究では世界市場の動向、地域的差異を重視しながら、新たなバティック産業に関する歴史像を提示したい。
バティック産業は植民地時期から現代まで「民族産業」として評価されている。ヨーロッパ、日本産綿製品が大量に流入する中、いかにして自国の伝統的産業が守られ、地域の重要な産業とみられるようになったのかという問題を検討することは、インドネシア研究の中で極めて重要なことであると考える。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The objectives of this study are, first, to examine the growth of the batik industry in Central Java and the North Coast region based on its regional characteristics. Second, to focus on the employment relationship between batik enterprises and workers in the respective regions and to examine the question of how this has affected local communities. Thirdly, it examines the question of what policies the Dutch Colonial Administration adopted in the context of the batik industry and the local economy, and how these policies affected the local communities. The second and third objectives were examined by means of the paper 'The Batik Industry in Indonesia during the Great Depression'.I am currently analysing the batik industry in the north coast region of Java, based on the growth of the industry and its relationship with the workers in a regional context.

本研究は、インドネシアのバティック（ロウケツ染め）産業の先駆的な歴史研究である。バティックはオランダ植民地期に産業として発展し、現在では「民族産業」と理解されている。主に国内市場向けの産業でありながら、植民地経済から現代まで主要な産業の一つとしてインドネシア経済に多大な影響力をもたらしてきた。インドネシアの商業分野では植民地時代から一般的に華人が優勢であるとされるが、この産業では例外的に現地人商人が活躍していた。従って、これらの産業について検討することは、民族資本家の成長を明らかにすることでもある。新たな資料を駆使することによってこれまでよりも詳細で包括的なバティック産業史研究を提示できる。
