申請者は、20世紀初頭におけるカナダ海軍の創設とイギリス帝国防衛構想に占めるカナダの位置づけとその意義を検討する。20世紀初頭におけるイギリス帝国防衛構想の中で、1911年に創設されたカナダ海軍はいかなる役割を担ったのか。またカナダ海軍創設と帝国防衛への貢献は、カナダの政治、カナダの人々のネイション、そして帝国に対するアイデンティティの形成にいかなる影響を与えたのか。この課題を検討することで、この後二度の大戦を乗り越えたカナダ、そしてイギリス帝国の防衛体制の拡充過程、さらにはカナダの軍事的貢献がウェストミンスター憲章制定に至るイギリス本国・植民地関係の再編に与えた影響をも解明することを目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The research theme,'The Establishment of the Canadian Navy and the Defence Strategy of the British Empire,' clarified the following points.
First, the Liberal Party of Canada expected to establish a navy for imperial defence to strengthen Canada's autonomous position within the empire. This was consistent with other imperial policies of the Liberal Party at the time, such as the imperial economic integration plan. Second, although the Conservative Party, which was in opposition, wanted Canada to contribute to the British navy and be defended by the British navy, it also sought to strengthen military integration with the empire, albeit by different means. Third, underlying the debates on the establishment of a Canadian navy was the idea of sentimental ties within the empire based on Britishness. It led to the decentralisation of the imperial defence system and the desire for Canada to defend itself autonomously.

本研究課題は、カナダ海軍の創設をめぐる議論について検討することで、イギリス帝国内における植民地カナダの位置付け、そしてカナダのネイション・ビルディングについて再検討を行っている。本研究にて明らかとなったのは、植民地が帝国から単線的に分離・独立へと向かうのではなく、帝国内での地位向上を目指すことでイギリスと対等となり、イギリスと共に帝国を支える存在となることを目指すという植民地カナダのナショナリズムであった。こうした研究の成果は、1931年のウェストミンスター憲章制定に至るイギリス本国・植民地間関係の再編過程を主に軍事的観点から解明することに寄与するものであり、その点に学術的意義がある。
