Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、日記に記された天候情報を利用し、17世紀から19世紀にわたる全国各地の日射量を復元し、高い時空間分解能の気候変動解析を行う研究である。
・200年を超える長期の日単位の天候情報を日射量という気象変数を用いて定量化し、空間的な時系列解析を可能とする気候復元を行う。
・復元された日射量を時空間的に解析し、日本全国規模の天候パターンの数十日から数十年の時間スケールでの変動を明らかにする。
・復元された日射量、農業に関する情報、米価等の経済情報を用いて、江戸時代における「人間社会が気候要因にどのように反応したか」について、統合的に解析する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study utilized historical weather records from diaries in the Edo period to reconstruct solar radiation across 60 locations in Japan from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Notably, it provides continuous solar radiation data from 1720 to 2022, linked seamlessly with modern observations. Principal component analysis applied to the reconstructed nationwide data from 1821 to 1850 clarified patterns of cool summers. Moreover, quantitative analysis demonstrated causal links between decreased solar radiation and soaring rice prices during the Tenpo famine, exploring how climate change quantitatively affected agricultural yields, economic conditions, and population migration. These results have been internationally presented and developed in collaboration with researchers in Europe and beyond.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、古天気という定性的なデータを日射量として復元する方法を構築し、統計的解析を可能とした。これにより、17世紀以降における気候変動が農業、経済、人口移動など社会全般に与えた影響を、時系列的かつ定量的に分析した。特に、経済史などとの具体的で定量的な解析事例を複数提示したことで、気候学と歴史学の連携を深め学際的な研究の発展に貢献した。
過去の社会活動への異常天候の影響を示すことは、将来の気候変動に対する適応策への知見になる。国際的には、ユーラシア規模での気候変動と社会への影響の議論に寄与する貴重な事例となり、新たな国際的研究に発展している。
