多文化社会におけるエスニック・マイノリティの老いは、エイジズムとエスニシティから生起する社会的不利益に瀕していると指摘されている。国、文化・言語、家族、社会福祉・医療システムなどの境界を越えたライフ・スタイルを持つ者の高齢期における尊厳は、高齢者の文化的アイデンティティと、居住する国の医療・社会福祉システムとのせめぎ合いの中にある。本研究は、海外在住の日本人高齢者のリターン・マイグレーション志向（日本に帰国する、あるいは、帰国する選択肢を否定しないという考え方）に焦点を当て、老いという文化喪失の過程における日本文化・日本的ケアへの回帰と高齢者のウェルビーイングについての考察を与える。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study reveals a return-migration orientation (i.e., holding on to the idea of returning to Japan as a choice for old age as well) among Japanese elderly living abroad to seek Japanese-style care in Japan, where they can experience cultural and linguistic wellbeing in their prolonged old age and old age. It also reveals conflicts over cultural wellbeing in the process of cultural loss called aging.
The mixed-method analysis shows that the attributes of the elderly that are strongly related to return migration are “nationality” and “family structure and its place of residence,” and the structure of “empathic anxiety” that covers the elderly community.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
多文化社会における日本人・日系人高齢者は、エイジズム、エスニシティ、ジェンダーの3重の不可視性を持った存在であることから、学術的にも注目度が低いテーマであった。この研究の学術的な意義は、このエスニック高齢者の老いに焦点をあて、全体像を把握するために量的アプローチを、個別の老いをグルーバル・マイグレーションという世界の動きの中に関連付けるために質的アプローチを補完的に用いながらオリジナルデータを収集し、その両方のデータから「共感する不安」の構造を明らかにしたところにある。
