Outline of Research at the Start

The objective of this research is to clarify the role of the material culture of disaster in the knowledge and perception of the local environment and in relation to risk awareness and resilience.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This research aims at clarifying the role of the material culture of disaster in the knowledge and perception of the local environment in
relation to risk awareness and resilience. The focus is specifically on water-related disaster and the approach multi-sited (Japan and France).
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many aspects of the project couldn’t proceed as originally planned. However, fieldworks have been
conducted fully in AY2023 and brought significant results about several sites in France (specifically La Faute Sur Mer), with perspective for future development.
Two papers are now in their conception phase following these fieldworks, as well as communication for future research collaborations.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project couldn’t proceed as originally planned. Most fieldwork had to be cancelled the previous 2 years,
leading to significant changes in plans and actions. AY2023 was the 2nd year to be able to resume full fieldwork in France.
The conceptual framework developed previously and knowledge gained from literature and reflection with colleagues, the concept of
"memorialization of disaster" has been confirmed as a core element of the project, and the question of "how to integrate the memory
of past disaster" in the current environment a key feature. Continuing fieldwork has brought to the fore the disconnection between residents and their
environment as well as the potential of integrating risk more actively in the local culture as a tool for risk awareness.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Objectives for AY2024 are as follows:
1) conduct follow-up fieldwork in France.Follow-up interviews as well as new informants interviews have been planned for the 2nd half of the year.
2) conduct fieldwork in Kumamoto prefecture about memorialisation/visualisation of disaster. Contact has been taken.
3) keep on refining the theoretical framework, bringing together historical data, material culture-related data and the literature on disaster
memory.
4) Tying the current results with the next research step and work on consolidating the necessary network of informants and colleagues.
