Outline of Research at the Start |
The objective of this research is to clarify the role of the material culture of disaster in the knowledge and perception of the local environment and in relation to risk awareness and resilience.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research aims at clarifying the role of the material culture of disaster in the knowledge and perception of the local environment in relation to risk awareness and resilience. The focus is specifically on water-related disaster and the approach multi-sited (Japan and France). Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many aspects of the project couldn’t proceed as originally planned. However, fieldworks could finally be conducted fully in AY2022 and brought significant results about several sites in France (specifically Mortagne sur Gironde and La Faute Sur Mer). Two papers are now in their conception phase following these fieldworks and a workshop is planned on related issues.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project couldn’t proceed as originally planned. Most fieldwork had to be cancelled the previous 2 years, leading to significant changes in plans and actions. AY2022 was the first year to be able to resume full fieldwork in France. The conceptual framework developed previously and knowledge gained from literature and reflection with colleagues, the concept of "memorialization of disaster" is appearing more than ever to be a core element of the project, and the question of "how to integrate the memory of past disaster" in the current environment a key feature. Fieldwork has brought to the fore the disconnection between residents and their environment and this will likely be an important thread in coming months and further research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Objectives for AY2023 are as follows: 1) conduct follow-up fieldwork in France.Follow-up interviews as well as new informants interviews have been planned for September 2023. 2) conduct fieldwork in Kumamoto prefecture about memorialisation/visualisation of disaster. Contact has been taken. 3) keep on refining the theoretical framework, bringing together historical data, material culture-related data and the literature on disaster memory. If conducting fieldwork remains difficult, a heavier focus will be placed on 1) exploring historical archives on disaster and the related material culture, 2) analyzing the content of the French collaborative database of flood markers as well as the flood-related content of the Japanese GSI database.
