この研究は、デジタル・ネイティブである若者がスマートフォンを利用するなかで、現実と仮想のソーシャル・ネットワークの動態の現状について調べ、そして旧世代から危惧されているような、ヴァーチャル・コミュニケーションの増大ははたしてユーザーのナルシズム化と「新しい孤独」を生んでいるのかという疑問について答えるために、（リアルとヴァーチャルの両方の）エスノグラフィーの手法を使って、世界のいくつかの地域の共通性と多様性の特性を明らかにすることにある。このことにより若者の間に流布している「ナルシズム」や「孤独」の意味とICT時代のコミュニケーションに新たな知見をもたらす。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In order to (1) examine the current dynamics of real and virtual social networks among young digital natives using smartphones, and (2) answer the question of whether the growth of virtual communication has led to narcissism and a "new type of loneliness" among users, we used ethnographic and other methods to investigate the characteristics of universal commonalities and cultural diversities. The results revealed that the subjective sense that the total amount of real communication in terms of mutual exchange of information is also increasing, even among people today who are dependent on social networking services, is ultimately putting a stop to tend to the narcissism and sense of loneliness and/or isolation of users.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
この研究は、生まれた時からタブレットやスマホ端末と共に生活している若者たちは、Z世代あるいはi世代と呼ばれているが、彼らがインターネットワーク環境を利用することで、それ以前の親の世代や教育関係者あるいは行政が危惧するようなナルシシズム化や「新しい孤独」が、先鋭化された形では実際にはおこっていないことを明らかにした。ただしこのようなSNSなどを使ったいじめやハラスメントに対するこの世代以降の心理的抵抗力(レジリエンス)は、それ以前の世代による教育を通した介入によって食い止められているにすぎない、ことにも留意すべきであろう。
