集合体恐怖症トライポフォビアとは、蓮の花托やフジツボ等小さな穴や隆起物の集合体に対して名状しがたい不快や嫌悪を抱く状態を指す。公式の恐怖症ではないが世間の関心は非常に高く、2013年に学術的探索が開始されて以来、加速度的に研究が推進されている。生命を脅かす危険生物や病気・病原体に対する生得的適応反応との説が有力であるが、それを裏付けるようなヒト以外の動物での研究はまだない。またトライポフォビアの特徴である「怖いもの見たさ」についても検討されていない。本研究は、トライポフォビアの機序解明のための非ヒト霊長類モデル作製とトライポフォビアの「怖いもの見たさ」立証を目的として実施する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Aggregation-phobic trypophobia refers to a state of unspecified discomfort or disgust to aggregates of small holes or ridges, such as lotus seed pods or barnacles. In this study, we attempted to create a non-human primate model and to prove "fearfulness" of trypophobia in the common marmoset. Marmosets exposed to stimuli with a trypophobic pattern showed significantly prolonged visual attention and an expression of fear-related vocal patterns, but no clear escape behavior. The results suggest that non-human human primates may elicit responses similar to trypophobia in humans.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
トライポフォビアに関する学術的研究は2013年に開始され、その発生機序については危険生物や病気・病原体に対する中核的嫌悪の関与が指摘されてきた。しかしながら、これまでヒト以外の動物での研究は実施されておらず、本研究によって初めて、動物でもトライポフォビアを示唆する反応が惹起されることが分かった。トライポフォビアの進化適応説を裏付ける結果につながるものと考えられる。
