Outline of Research at the Start |
Through an examination of gender and Hansen's disease, this work clarifies the gendered nature of illness experience and women's roles by exploring the tension between the ways literature was used by women diagnosed with Hansen’s disease and how women and illness were depicted in popular culture.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the final fiscal year, I finalized my archival work and was able to access new media sources that were a significant contribution to the book manuscript. I published an article in Japanese on gender and the poetry of Toh Kazuko, based on an English presentation on the same subject I gave. I further finished an English language article on gender and Hansen's disease, which has been accepted by a peer-reviewed journal and will appear in the fall. My book manuscript is near completion and I am working on publication.
