Outline of Research at the Start |
Through an examination of gender and Hansen's disease, this work clarifies the gendered nature of illness experience and women's roles by exploring the tension between the ways literature was used by women diagnosed with Hansen’s disease and how women and illness were depicted in popular culture.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I completed several research trips to collect new materials, and accessed archival material from several institutions around Japan. I gave several presentations of my work, including at the annual Association for Asian Studies conference. I published one preliminary paper and have a book chapter in press. I have continued to make progress on the final book manuscript as well.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Despite continued challenges presented by COVID-19 and different policies regarding archival access, I have made signficant progress on my work.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the final year of the kaken, I will complete my archival materials collection and complete the book manuscript. I plan to publish several articles that were not part of the book, as well as presenting my work at international academic conferences.
