| Outline of Research at the Start |
Saracenという呼称で表されるイスラム教徒は、中世キリスト教徒にとって最大の脅威となる他者であり、近年では中世におけるその表象がポストコロニアル批評やオリエンタリズム研究といった文脈から注目を集めている。一方で、中英語で書かれた作品に頻繁に登場するSaracen像についての研究は、未だ十分になされてはいない。本研究は、中英語ロマンス作品群において描かれるSaracen表象が、それぞれの文化的、社会的文脈に応じてどのような役割を担っていたのかを明らかにすることを目的とする。またそうした文献の分析を通して、そこに現れる宗教、人種的他者に対する心的態度を明らかにすることを目指すものである。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project aims to explore how the representation of Saracens (the term usually considered to refer to Muslims living in the East and medieval Spain) developed in narratives labeled as ‘Middle English romance’ and what kind of socio-political roles they were expected to fulfil in each narrative. In medieval European narratives, Saracens are regarded as a typical religious other of Christians and their otherness is often represented through their physical features such as their dark skin, bestial features, and strange cultural / religious customs, even though these features were not accurate for the representation of actual Muslims. Through the analysis of such distorted images of Saracens, my research has attempted to demonstrate how medieval Christians in Western Europe struggled to come to terms with people and cultures different from their own.

中世ヨーロッパにおいて描かれたイスラムの表象を対象とする研究は宗教と人種の問題に対する関心の高まりとともに、新たに注目されるようになっている。本研究は、近代以前には存在しなかったと考えられている「人種」という概念が「宗教」と密接に結びついたものとして存在しており、現代において他者を区別し排除する心的態度はすでに中世ヨーロッパにおいて観察できることを文学作品に対する分析を通して示している。ここで提示された問題意識は、中世イングランドにおける人々の想像力を理解する一助となるだけではなく、人種差別や他者の排除という概念がいかに恣意的に形作られたものであるかを示してくれる。
