Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の目的は、製造業におけるイノベーションの地理的特徴について、知識や技術の質的側面に着目することで、それらの動態的な生成過程を定量的・定性的に分析し、「技術イノベーションシステム(TIS)」の空間的メカニズムを解明することである。まず、特許を用いた都市と技術のネットワーク分析を行い、特定の場所でしか生まれていない技術の特徴を同定する。さらに、特定の知識や技術に着目し、資料の精査や重要なアクターに対するインタビュー調査などを行い、複数の技術イノベーションシステムを比較検討することで、イノベーション政策や地域産業振興政策への含意を抽出する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study uses Japanese patent data to show how innovation is divided between metropolitan cores and regional hubs. Comparing 1975-1994 with 1995-2014, we find that biotechnology and construction are increasingly concentrated in metropolitan areas, while optics and information are more geographically dispersed. The once strong spatial overlap between different technologies has diminished, suggesting that local specialization may hinder cross-field collaboration. Looking at Green Transformation (GX) patents from 1985-2022, this study finds that battery and low-carbon process inventions remain clustered around metropolitan areas, but subclasses such as solid biofuels and electric heating have key inventors located in peripheral areas and at the margins of inventor networks. These peripheral actors often occupy the main technological paths. Overall, Japan now exhibits a dual spatial regime.

本研究は、長期的な特許分析と、技術軌道の分析を接続し、都市への集中と地方での特化が並存する日本のイノベーションの地理を体系的に可視化・分析した点で、学術的意義が大きい。特に、多義的な"Periphery"(周縁)がGX技術のメインパスを形成し得ることを定量的に示したことは、イノベーションにおける周縁の再評価という、近年注目されている研究潮流に貢献する。社会的には、地方創生とグリーン技術・産業による経済成長が模索されている中で、多様な地域の可能性を示した点に意義がある。
