Outline of Research at the Start |
GOAL platform synchronizes data from BookRoll, an e-book-based learning system and physical activity data from wearable devices applications such as Google Fit and Apple Health. It aims to design and develop AI-based adaptive scaffolds using the data collected in the GOAL system and evaluate its efficiency and effectiveness. key question of investigation is "How does learners develop their self-directedness using learning and wellbeing activity data and adaptive technology support?"
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The GOAL project focused on various aspects of self-directed daily learning activities of students. DAPER model is proposed as the process model where students can collect their activity data, analyze their status, plan, execute and monitoring their activity and reflect after the plan period. To support that process a web and mobile based GOAL system is implemented. It is used in a Japanese high school and junior high school context. The learning activity data is logged from a reading based learning platform, BookRoll. GOAL system can track daily amount of pages and the time that the student is spending reading. The physical activity levels such as the steps taken and sleep actions are synchronized in the GOAL system from smartwatches such as Garmin device through web API. To support the users, we setup smartwatch devices for the students to start collecting their daily physical activities and use BookRoll to conduct extensive reading of english story books. Data collected in the system is curated and the project defined strategies to measure self-direction skills based on the activity data level as well as interaction in the GOAL system related to DAPER. At the university level the GOAL system was introduce in the Kyoto University's reading based course. The findings from the studies in different educational levels which are partially supported by the funding are reported in more than 20 peer reviewed international publications.

Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The work has progressed, however due to the onset of Covid the field study is delayed.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The future work aims to integrate the data from the daily learning context at the school level. A score input module for weekly test is incorporated in GOAL system to investigate high school and junior high school student's learning habits. The analysis of the data currently collected in the system would also be done and reported in peer reviewed international publication.
