Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、近年さまざまな形で顕在化してきている熱に関する諸問題の解決に資する新規なマルチ熱量効果材料の開拓を目指すものである。注目点の一つは、磁気エントロピーの変化を利用した磁気熱量効果による磁気冷却である。特異な磁気転移を示す遷移金属酸化物が新規な磁気熱量効果材料となり得ること、さらにはこのエントロピー変化による熱量効果を複数の外場により制御する「マルチ熱量効果」となることの実証を目指す。本研究により、従来材料とは異なる巨大なエントロピー変化の本質を解明するための学理の構築とその応用展開へ向けた新材料の開拓も国際共同研究を含めて展開する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、近年、熱に関する問題がさまざまな形で顕在化する中で、その解決に資する新材料の開発を目指してきた。その中で特に熱量効果を示す材料に注目して研究を行い、新材料を開発するための指針を提示することができた。
Aサイト秩序型ペロブスカイト構造酸化物NdCu3Fe4O12における巨大圧力熱量効果と同構造のBiCu3Cr4O12でのマルチ熱量効果（圧力熱量効果と磁気熱量効果）を発見し、1次の電荷転移に伴う磁気エントロピーの変化が巨大なエントロピー変化の主たる要因であることを明らかにした。実際に大きな格子変形（負熱膨張）を示す(Bi,Ln)NiO3では、Bi-Niサイト間での電荷移動が起こる転移温度とNiスピンの磁気転移温度が一致せず、磁気転移に伴う磁気エントロピーの変化が多くの磁性材料にみられるような2次的なものとなるため、潜熱にあまり寄与しないことが明らかとなった。つまり、巨大な熱量効果を発現するためには、電荷‐スピン‐格子が強く相関した物質系において、電荷転移・磁気転移・格子変形が同時にかつ1次的に起こることが重要であることが示唆される。特に、本質的には高い磁気転移温度を内在しているにも関わらず、電荷転移により磁気転移が抑制され、結果的に電荷転移によって特異な1次磁気転移が誘起されることが重要であるということを明らかにすることができた。このようなエントロピー増大のメカニズムは新規なものであり、特に大きな熱量効果を示す新材料の設計では、新たな開発指針となるものである。また、電荷‐スピン‐格子が相関した物質系では、潜熱を電場、磁場、圧力という複数の外場で制御できるマルチ熱量効果材料として機能させることができる可能性がある点でも重要である。
