Outline of Research at the Start

地球科学や資源工学では、地層内部の流体挙動や弾性特性を調べることが多く、室内実験による測定が行われてきた。室内実験には長い時間を要し、測定環境や実験する人によって結果が変わることもあった。一方、これらの物理特性は、岩石内部の間隙形状に強く依存していることが知られている。そこで本研究では、高解像度CTによってデジタル化された岩石内部の3次元間隙形状に対して、機械学習や数学的手法を適用し、浸透率や弾性定数といった物理特性を推定する手法を開発する。さらにこの機械学習を用いた手法を発展させ、上記の手法と反対に、測定データ(例えば弾性波形)から間隙形状を推定する手法開発も行う。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have developed methods to estimate physical properties (e.g., permeability, seismic velocity, and electrical resistivity) from the digital rock models based on machine learning and mathematical approach (i.e., persistent homology).
(1) We used machine learning to estimate physical properties (e.g., permeability and seismic velocities) directly from the pore geometry (digital rock model). We evaluated the optimum parameters in machine learning and succeeded to accurately estimate the permeability and seismic velocity.
(2) Because the persistence diagram derived from persistent homology includes information of the shape and geometry of rock pore space, the seismic velocity and permeability of the rock model can be estimated from the persistence diagram.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

・高解像度CTを用いて取得した岩石内部構造の画像データ(デジタル岩石モデル)があれば、その岩石の水理特性や弾性特性、電気的特性を推定することが可能となった。この手法は、岩石の物性推定以外にも、CT画像を扱う医療分野や、人工素材の物性推定などの他分野への展開が考えられる。
・本研究で開発した手法を利用すれば、誰が解析しても同様の結果を得ることができる。近年、実験データの反復試験や再現性の問題が取り上げられることが多いが、その問題を低減することができる。
・機械学習で、物理特性を支配している間隙形状(岩石内部構造)を明らかにできることも分かり、岩石物理や地震学の分野へのフィードバックも可能となった。
